      I grew up on LI… my brain said a jetty was man made out of rocks, like a breakwater…. But then I started a dive into it, and the terms Jetty, breakwater, pier, and short pier (apparently there is a difference!) can be very confusing… When I have real internet Ill have to do a deep dive. But for now, based on what I have read, I think we are both right.

    54 years old. Athletic. I bought a cheap kayak to see if I like the sport. I do and want to buy a higher end boat. Zero places in central PA to 'rent' a different one each week. I've researched more about kayaks than any one man should and have my supposed preferences buy don't know for sure until I'm in the seat. I have a Harley and if someone wanted to drive it to see if they liked it is out of the question. I guess kayak owners are different? I $1000 plus kayak lend is a hard thing to ask for. I'll look into Amazon's return policy. HA

      The lack of ability to test paddle a boat is one of the communities bigger problems. Some dealers at the beginning of the season will do “demo days.” So they will go to a lake bring 100 boats and let people test paddle them. A dealer I teach for occasionally does this (NC based). Yeah, I don’t like letting people paddle my boat, but if someone reached out and said “could I….” I would make it happen for them. It is probably hit or miss. I will say, when I bought my first delta, I went to East Coast Kayak festival and was disappointed Delta wasn’t there. I did find a dealer who carried them, but the only boat they had was purchased and being picked up by the new owner that day. I found him and he let me paddle his BRAND NEW BOAT! I ordered one the next day. So, it’s rare… but you can find people who will let you test paddle. What boat did you decide on? (Also, REI has a good return policy.)

    Starting to re-watch your videos on stuff like spray skirts, getting in/out without tipping, etc, that weren't as relevant to me as a SOT kayaker but now that I've got my Sealution II I'm sure I'm going to be wiping out a lot until I get used to it. I just ordered a spray skirt from REI, that and my float bags should be here within a week, so hoping to get it out for a maiden voyage shortly thereafter. I've got a lot to learn before then. The idea of rolling over in a spray skirt makes me nervous right now, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

    • @AdventureOtaku

      Just make sure the handle is on the outside… super easy. If you have working hatch covers you don’t need the float bags. Hatches will leak a little but you won’t sink

I change the actual track when I get sick of it… which is actually about three times a year. Sorry you don’t like it, it’ll change soon. There are a lot of reasons that I use something like that… originally it was similar to the intro for an Anthony bourdain show… then it was similar to blondies one way or another…. Funny enough, for the second time this month, when I went to take out at a boat ramp there were people doing non-boat stuff on the ramp. The North Face clothing fit perfectly.. that’s why people buy it . Stores sell what sells .. Patagonia is garbage .. clothing that fits like a tent. Times change and products people buy are being dialed in to what works best. Idk about boats though .. at least REI lets you return the product that doesn’t work for you. I stopped buying from cottage companies because I can’t try them out or on before buying. Bedrock shoes really hurt my feet. So it’s best not to waste my time anymore and just buy from REI. God Bless you in finding the right products for you.

    Having camping grounds like that must be really nice to have, I know Sweden and Norway also have them, but here in the UK we don't have anything like them, as land is around water us usually owned. So if there is a campsite it is a business. We can camp in some places without having to pay, but in England and Wales it isn't actually legal to just set up camp. Plenty of people do it anyway. I have done it my self, so it is really important to leave absolutely no trace of you being there. Lockdown there was a massive influx of people camping and leaving places a real mess. idiots buying cheap gear and then dumping it once they were done with it. Scotland has Open Access, which is fantastic as you can camp in many a great spot. There have been campaigns to try and bring it in in England and Wales, but so far it hasn't happened. there was at one point looking like the Government was going to toughen up on Trespass Laws. Nice long video to enjoy this week. thank you Brett. Werner/Lendal/Werner paddle usage, incase your check to see if we have noticed.

      In fairness, I did pay for my campsites on this trip. (But if you watch my cape lookout videos, there you don’t have to) but it amazingly wonderful that we have access to that with camping. We saw the same issues during lockdown here. So I can sympathize.

    Excellent video! Really enjoyed it, thanks. Navigating that area is tricky, even in clear weather conditions. It can be very difficult to tell whether the land you are seeing is the actual island, or just some large hummock. I did a one-night trip down to the Green Run site (your second site), about 10.5 (statute) miles from the Ferry Landing launch, and was thankful that the leader of our 3-person party had been there many times before. I did have a hand-held marine GPS map device along for that trip, which is very helpful in that environment, and (along with always having a deck compass) I always wear a GPS watch whenever I paddle, so it's easy to see at a quick glance how far I have paddled at any given moment, and how fast I am moving. Re: the schlepping of stuff to/from the campsite -- looks like you had a duffel bag to haul the various bits and pieces. I like to use a big full-mesh version that is super light and takes up very little room, empty, in the hatch. Agree the gear schlep is the worst part, but I have also backpacked twice to one of the Assateague sites, and also agree that doing it via kayak is MUCH preferable! :) A few other notes for those interested who have never been to Assateague: (1) Do not count on enough downed wood being available to build a fire (in fact, you should probably assume that you will not be able to build a fire.) (2) There is no fresh water available at the back country sites; it's all salt/brackish, so you have to haul all of the water you need for cooking and drinking. (3) As alluded to in the video, the mosquitos and other flying pests will consume the flesh from your bones, lol. It's not a trip that would be very fun at the height of summer (my three trips were late April, first few days of May, and mid-November). I keep a bug head-net on hand, ready to quickly deploy. Ticks can be plentiful, too. (4) Practice safe food storage. A lot of the picnic tables at the sites have handy storage compartments built in. There are wild ponies on the island, and they like to (sometimes destructively) scavenge for people food. (This is probably not as much of a problem at the back country sites as it is at the non-primitive and more populated State Park and National Seashore camping sites, but I did have some ponies visit my campsite on my most recent backpacking trip, April 2024.)

    Fellow New Yorker here. I recently found your channel and really appreciate all the information you provide. I missed your questionnaire, but the topics you mentored really spoke to me. I'm coming from the backpacking world and would like to venture more into paddle power than foot power (recovering from my 4th foot/ankle surgery and I REALLY don't want a 5th). I've been paddling/kayak camping with my 11' Perception for 25+ years and it's time for something a little more conducive to my needs - looking at the Delta 14 or the Eddyline Sitka. Any places around NYC (LI, NJ, CT) you would suggest for renting and/or lessons? One tip that I'm reminding myself of more and more is "Don't compete against your younger self." Thanks again! I'm looking forward to learning more from your videos.

      Unfortunately, I left NY (though I am in eastern PA now) a long time ago. I used to paddle the north shore of LI, and there were a bunch of retailers that rented. I am not sure who does anymore. Wish I could be of more help.

    Okay, so noob questions now that I've got my WS. I ordered NRS float bags from REI and they should be here soon, I'm still waiting to hear from Top Kayaker on hatch seals. It doesn't look like you run a paddle tether. What happens if you get dumped by a wave and lose your paddle? Do you have a spare of some sort on board? I'm asking because I've got both a paddle tether and a spare paddle on my SOT, but it's vastly different style of kayaking so I get things are different with sea kayaking. If it seems from my questions that I'm missing details from your videos, allow me to explain that most of the time, I'm listening to videos while driving on my long commute, I don't always get the opportunity to actually watch them on the screen, so sometimes something that might be obvious from the video isn't obvious when I'm listening to it like it's a podcast. I've already learned that if there's a long pause in your audio, it means you're putting text on the screen and I go back and view later to see what I missed, but sadly time constraints don't always allow me to view every single video on the screen.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku 4 дні тому

      I don’t use a “tether” which is really called a paddle leash. Some do, I don’t. Particularly in waves I feel the risk of entanglement is higher than the risk of losing your paddle. I’ve never lost a paddle even getting dumped in surf. On long days or overnight trips I do pack a spare. But again, in 20+!years I have never broken a paddle.

    • @kayak_homie
      @kayak_homie 4 дні тому

      @@AdventureOtaku roger that. Entanglement is probably more of a risk on a sea kayak as well, I hadn't thought of that.

    I don't care what country makes kayaks and I don't mind them being imported into the USA. Deltas are made just over the border from Washington in BC. What I don't like is US manufacturers moving to China or Mexico for the sake of cheap labor, lower taxes, lower environmental and labor standards and still expect us to buy their product. I was always thrilled both Eddyline Kayaks and Werner paddles are made right here in Washington State. Werner is only 20 minutes away and is moving to Arkansas, Eddyline was in Burlington, about an hour and ten minutes away and has already moved to Mexico. I'm not buying the "can't stop globalism, they had to do this to stay afloat line." I'm interested in what others have to say about this. Below are cut-and-pastes from their own websites from June 23, 2024. Eddyline Kayaks 2017 Tom and Lisa Derrer hand over the reins of Eddyline Kayaks to its seasoned management team. The current ownership / management team of Todd Keane, Janet Sutton and Scott Holley, along with the entire Eddyline staff, stand committed to honoring the Eddyline legacy of innovative design and superior customer service. 2021 Eddyline expands production to Queretaro Mexico to improve capacity and innovation from proximity to critical suppliers. RZC, the investment office of Steuart and Tom Walton, makes a strategic investment to facilitate the company’s growth. 2023 Eddyline relocates to Siloam Springs near several world-class kayak parks. This central location helps Eddyline improve its distribution throughout North America. Delta Kayaks PROUDLY MADE IN NORTH AMERICA All of our kayak models are made right at our manufacturing facility in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. We use Computer Aided Design (CAD) and over 35+ years of experience to design our kayaks. The final assembly and finishing touches are done by hand so that every step of the process is up to our strict standards.

    Third thing, I would like to see Delta bring out a 24.5 wide, with a larger cockpit for us larger paddlers. I understand the 15.5 is 24.5 wide but not sure if the cockpit is larger than my 17. Eddyline has a Sitka XT that is about 15.5 long, 24.5 wide, larger cockpit and deeper, more aggressive combing. I was looking at this model for my second boat. I will not get an Eddyline now because they shut down shop here in Washington State and moved their manufacturing to Mexico and headquarters to Arkansas. More on that later.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku 3 дні тому

      When I bought my first delta seventeen it was available in two models. A sport (low volume) and an expedition (high volume.) the cockpit wasn’t any wider, but it was deeper. There was also a delta eighteen.5 which fit my buddy (6’5” and at least 220) beautifully. I am sure they removed these from the line up as they weren’t selling well but it was so great to have options. Delta has continued to decrease the options both in models and features.

    I love the day hatch, great place for my snacks and electronics. Not in the way at all and easily accessible. I use a GearLab deck pod and can still get in and out of the day hatch. The cockpit combing could be a little bit deeper but haven't had too much trouble using the Delta neoprene skirt.

    First comment, thanks for the review of the D 17, that's what I have and enjoy very much. My first question is what do you use to lubricate the hatch gaskets, I've used Armor All Original and recently tried Vaseline. I know it's important to keep up the treatment to ensure smooth operation on and off. They get a bit sticky and difficult otherwise. What have you settled on?

    I have so far settled on the side method you first show. I’m 6’3” and 250 and can’t sit in the seat (all the way back) and fold my legs in. I’m too big, old and stiff for that. Once I’m in my Delta 17 it fits me very comfortably and I can and have paddled up to five- hour stretches, but prefer 3-hour stretches as good enough.

    To get back into kayaking I bought a little kayak with no seat back, thigh hooks nor hip padding. This forced me to sit up and gain core strength. After a couple of years I still haven't added the missing bits in and happy paddling for 4 hours or more. For me, if the seat back is above the coaming I just keep walking.
